A storage warehouse is a place where merchandise and products are stored to keep them safe and fresh. A cold storage warehouse is a type of storage facility that is designed to stock and keep a variety of products cool and freshed. Such a warehouse is essential to store fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy products, seafood, or a combination of these food items. Many perishable food items go stale in a matter of a few days. Hence, cold storage warehouses store these food items to ensure they stay in a healthy condition.
Cold storage companies design their storage facilities by keeping in mind the needs and requirements of different types of food items. Some products require to be stored at a very cool temperature, and some only require a moderately cool temperature. Cold storage companies dealing in seafood or meat services function differently than the companies handling the storage of vegetables and fruits. What is also different is how various companies store the same kind of product. Seafood storage in a town near the sea or an ocean would be different from seafood storage in a town away from any water bodies.
Therefore, to meet these varied conditions, cold storage companies build a different types of warehouses:
Multi-story warehouses have a basement floor, and they go up to three to twelve floors above the ground. Many such multi-story warehouses were constructed to store one type of product – usually fish or meat. An advantage of a multi-story warehouse is that it is the best option for a land constrained area, taking up less occupied space and the ability to have multiple storage floors. It is the type of warehouse that is low on rent too, so, all the money saved on rent can go to highly skilled labourers or any other business’ necessities.
In earlier times, non-palletized multi-story warehouses existed. They had many operations to be performed by many people. In modern times though, going through these many operations of freezing, storing, moving, removing, cartooning, etc, is seen as a waste of time and labour. To overcome such disadvantages, many cold storage companies have converted to palletized operations for their warehouses. This conversion reduces the operational costs and the demand for labour by 45 to 50 per cent.
In recent years, with the increasing demand for frozen foods, the designs of cold storage warehouses have undergone many changes. Warehouses used to be designed to store one particular item or product in the whole building or area. Now, with the change in the consumption habits of individuals, warehouses have also changed to meet the ever-increasing demands. Cold storage warehouses store many products, including -pizzas, pies, canned sweets, canned soups, packaged vegetables, packaged fish, etc. One-story warehouses are able to handle these varieties of foods with mechanical equipment and labour saving safety devices.
The one-story warehouses are constructed on base slabs with warm air ducts underneath them, or they are constructed on piles that extend up to 3 or 4 feet off the ground where the ventilated air space carries the cold air away from the ground.
A cold storage warehouse is a type of storage facility for a variety of products. Vegetables, fruits, seafood and many other foods can be stored in the highly safe and cool environment of a cold storage warehouse. Different types of warehouses are used these days for different purposes and for meeting the demands of consumers. Choosing a multi-story warehouse would provide you with a lot of storage to keep a particular food item, whereas, a one-story warehouse would be beneficial for a variety of food items.
