What are the benefits of cold storage?
Cold storages are one of the many facilities provided by 3PL service providers. 3PL is a short form for third party logistics.
Cold storage is an essential feature for keeping food products fresh. Most of the food items come under the perishable category which tend to get spoiled or decayed if not kept at a certain temperature. Perishable food items include seafood, meat, and vegetables.
The food industry is one of the biggest industries in the world. Even a small business owner dealing with food items needs cold storage. When it comes to the delivery of food products from a manufacturing unit to stores, businesses need transportation services. Not just any transport service, but one with a facility for keeping their products fresh.
Even at the stage of warehousing these products cold storage is necessary. Most modern warehouses come with cold storage. There are many cold storage companies operating in the world, and one can find such companies in almost every metropolitan city.
Why do we need cold storage? The following are some of the reasons for needing cold storage:
Preserve perishable food for a longer time
As mentioned already, most of the food items we consume are perishable and need to be stored for a period of time. At home, we stock them in refrigerators that have different compartments. The topmost shelf is the coldest and is a shelf to store meat products. Without cold storage, these food items will rot between storage and consumption and will be unsuitable to consume.
Cold storage slows down the growth of microorganisms
Food spoils due to microorganisms that eat up the food item and decompose it. In the process, they become catalysts of chemical changes in the food. The cold decreases and stops the growth of microorganisms and allows the food to remain consumable for a longer period of time.
Avoid food poisoning
If the food is not stored at the proper temperature, the results are disastrous. First, the microorganisms destroy the food by decomposing it and the food becomes unsuitable for consumption. Secondly, if consumed by mistake then it can lead to food poisoning. Consuming the product in its unhealthy state will result in sickness, so keeping the food in cold storage helps avoid food poisoning.
Helps you cook food faster
Another benefit of having cold storage is that it helps you cook food faster. Many of us don’t like cooking for long hours on a regular basis. We have personal as well as professional commitments that leave us no time. In such situations, we reheat the food already prepared such as pizzas stored in the cold and reheated which prepares them in no time. So, cold storage helps you cook food faster in one sense.
Control temperature
With cold storage, the temperature can be controlled as different food items need different temperatures. That is why we have two different temperatures in our refrigerators. Even in the most basic ones there is a freezer. The freezer is ideal for keeping ice cream, seafood and meats. These products can only be in the lower fridge for a short period of time and last longer in the freezer.
In the same way, warehouses also have cold storage made for different food items. Seafood and meat products are in different storage, so are butter and ice-creams, etc.
Thus, cold storages have many benefits such as it preserves longevity for the food, decreases the growth of microorganisms and reduces the chances of food poisoning.
